JULY TIP: Be a Tiger!

Imagining the qualities and characteristics of an animal can help you play or perform at your best. Many athletes use the image of a specific animal to bring out the qualities they want to exhibit in their play. They may use the animal technique for only a small part of their performance or for an entire performance. It truly depends on the individual athlete.

The key is to practice this imagery technique so that you can generate the right feelings and images when you need to perform. Rehearse your chosen image often.

Here are a few examples:

The Gazelle

You want to remain smooth but fast in your race, like a gazelle. Imagine the smooth fluidity of a gazelle running the savannah, notice its speed yet ease of movement. Now imagine yourself running with those same qualities and characteristics. Feel your speed and notice your effortless movement. Rehearse this image often so that you can connect the image with the feelings of running a smooth, yet fast, race.

The Tiger

As a rugby player you want to focus on making strong tackles, like a tiger closing in on a prey. Imagine a tiger on the hunt for prey. It is focused, on task and nothing can distract it from the hunt. The tiger keeps his eyes on his prey and once he is ready to attack he moves quickly while staying in control so as to eliminate the escape options for the prey. The tiger chases down the prey and takes it into its clutches, holding on tight and bringing the prey to ground. Now imagine yourself tackling with those same qualities and characteristics. See and feel yourself chasing down your "prey", staying focused on the target until you have captured it.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Remember that not all techniques work the same way for each athlete so it's important for you to try out different ones and see how they work for you.
